OPENING: DEAN STYERS SOLO EXHIBITION | Preservation Through Neglect

Opening reception at James Gray Gallery - Bergamot Station Art Center 2525 Michigan Ave, Building D4 Santa Monica CA
Friday February 16th from 6-9pm

Dean's work uses images of people or objects without clear context to elicit familiar emotions (a pretty girl, a well-dressed man, a child, an astronaut, an embracing couple) but undermines the emotions that attend these icons with text. While the subject is often attractive and comforting – eliciting feelings of nostalgia and innocence – the sentiment that overlays the image is typically bitter, or melancholic, or cynical, or even bleak- but always with the tiniest amount of hopefulness. This juxtaposition often creates a unique conflict for the viewer.

Dean's paintings have appeared in numerous galleries & museums (The Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Zimmer Museum, The Tucson Museum Of Art, etc.) sharing wall space with dozens of prominent artists, including Marc Ryden, Diane Arbus, Ed Ruscha, Barbara Kruger, John Baldessari, Robert Rauschenberg, Ralph Steadman and Andy Warhol.

OPENING:Dani Dodge's installation at SDAI: Museum of the Living Artist, "You Always Sleep Alone"

Opening reception at 1439 El Prado in San Diego's historic Balboa Park.
Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 6 to 8 p.m.

Dani Dodge's installation at SDAI: Museum of the Living Artist, "You Always Sleep Alone," examines the juxtaposition of longing for human connection, and fearing it at the same time.

In "You Always Sleep Alone," Dodge creates an immersive environment in which the participant moves into and through a dreamlike room where torn sheets are doors and white comforters hang overhead to create a ceiling. Contained in the environ are more than a half dozen separate narratives that explore the ways people attempt to cope with the utter aloneness of sleep, knowing by whatever means they grasp the present that it can still sneak away in the night, leaving them vulnerable to their nightmare fears and fantasies.

Some of these moments are created with bed-sized paintings wrapped in fabric and gauze. Others are hoisted onto bed frames attached to the walls or rest on the floor. The works are deeply layered and incorporate materials that both bind and protect, such as safety pins, staples and sutures. One piece is painted entirely with makeup. Another tableau plays out within a white baby crib.

And just as each Bonsai must have its Suiseki to create a true work of art, Dodge pairs each of these bed-shaped pieces with a counterpoint. Sometimes it's a box that the participant must open or a display of an item that reveals another side of the story.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The phone is 619-236-0011. Website:www.sandiego-art.org

Dodge, a Los Angeles resident, is represented by Pimento Fine Art in San Diego and currently has a solo show there as well. The show at Pimento, "Picking Up the Pieces," features paintings that incorporate architectural elements. The show runs through Jan. 1 2013. Please call 619-955-5285 to set up an appointment to view the show at Pimento. Pimento is located within Olive PR Solutions Inc. at 350 W. Ash St. #103, San Diego, Calif. 92101.

In 2012, Dodge also has had a solo show at L Street Fine Art in San Diego and a solo booth at Art San Diego 2012/Contemporary Art Fair. She is now working on an installation for the San Diego International Airport that will be placed in February 2013.

AIR'S "RUN" ANIMATED BY MELANIE MANDL

Reviewed in FILM INDEPENDANT on March 12th, 2012

Melanie Mandl's haunting animated music video for Air's song "Run" won the music video audience award at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival. The video was totally DIY, made in Mandl's own back yard. After it was finished she sent it to the French band Air to get their blessing on it and they liked it.

ATLAS RESONANCE PROJECT

Artist Project to be realized on December, 21st 2012

The Atlas Resonance Project is a world-wide participatory art project.

As the winter solstice of 2012 approaches we are inundated with messages about the foreboding changes that will occur on our planet induced by the Mayan prophecies.

The concept–the coin–is conceived — cast by a collective of artists at "La Fonderie" in Los Angeles. The culmination–the bronze bell–is the realized unified harmonic heart to be cast and rung in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in 12/2012.

Artists

Wayne Bannister

Collage Artist

Wayne's education and background work experience is in the fields of Environmental Design and Geographic Information Systems. He is currently studying Collage and Print Making at the Art Center College of Design.

Luc Bernard

Painter

A Canadian artist now residing in Los Angeles, Luc is represented by four galleries in North America. Luc first established himself in the Canadian art scene as an encaustic painter. The lush and textured landscapes he created always wanted to push towards abstraction, which became more and more apparent over the years. For the last 2 years, Luc's paintings have explored color and texture in oils and sumi ink.

Dani Dodge

Dani Dodge

Mixed Media/
Installation Artist

Dani Dodge explores the wars we wage within ourselves, and tells the stories in mixed media and installation.
Dani works primarily by layering different media – acrylic paint, spray paint, ink and collage – to create raw, abstracted images that tell tales of loneliness, joy, pain and triumph – in short, of being human.

Karen Kang

Karen Kang

Mixed Media Artist

Karen creates art on old book covers and book pages. She is particularly drawn to recycled and vintage materials, like old ads and magazines from the 50's. The use of vibrant color is important to her, as it contributes to the feeling of something new emerging from what has been discarded. Her use of collage, paint, detailed drawing and a multi-layered approach merge seamlessly together to form a cohesive visual experience.

Jesse Vogel

Painter

Originally from Santa Barbara, Jesse received his BFA from San Francisco State before moving to Los Angeles, where he currently resides. His paintings explore brief moments in time in urban and suburban landscapes. The images are drawn from photos he has taken around Los Angeles.

Image

Miri Chais

Mixed Media Artist

Chais' art combines cutting edge technology and virtual imagery in a dizzying and fascinating new aesthetic vision. Images from modern culture, from Japanese manga to pop music and other popular expressions can be found, along with a bizarrely modernist statue of the Colossus of Rhodes, which includes video, soundtrack, and tracking cameras straight from an Orwellian novel.
