Keystone Gallery is pleased to present Krista Machovina’s solo show Currents, a new body of work that deepens her exploration of time, memory, and personal history. The exhibit opens to the public March 1st and is on view in the gallery through March 9th, 2025.
Machovina has consistently explored the weighty nature of memory, and how we try to hold and store away moments like water slipping through our fingers. In Currents, she turns her attention to the ways in which we create narratives over time.
Using a combination of oil, mixed media, and distressed surfaces, her colors and imagery reflect the complexity of recall. Her use of photographs and weathered materials incorporates elements that suggest erosion and containment. Some details remain sharp, while others dissolve into abstraction.
Machovina continues her focus the sea as both subject and metaphor. As with the ocean’s currents, memory is never static. It changes and reforms in unexpected ways. Currents invites viewers to immerse themselves in this movement, drifting through the layers of personal, selective and collective memory.
Krista Machovina’s paintings and mixed media work incorporate meditative depictions of the sea and sky with themes of resilience and memory. She earned a BFA in Art Education from the University of Illinois and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, but has maintained a fulltime studio practice and exhibition schedule since 2011. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
