Passages
A solo exhibition by Mollie M Murphy
August 3 - August 11, 2024
Opening Reception Saturday August 3rd 6-9pm
Keystone Gallery is pleased to present Passages, Mollie M Murphys’ first solo show with the gallery. Born in Scotland the artist spent most of her teenage years in Glasgow where she discovered a love of Drawing and the graphic traditions attending life drawing classes at Glasgow Art school since her mid teens.
Murphy went on to attend Goldsmiths College in London where she further developed her passion for drawing by exploring the ancient traditions of cave painting and Zen calligraphy in addition to the Western European tradition of Expressionism.
It was through this exploration that Murphy developed her singular language which combines the history of drawing from its earliest inception through both abstract and figurative traditions to create a vocabulary with which she can play. The artists language encompasses a wide range of linear marks which have evolved from an innate understanding of both human and animal, internal and external form. In these drawings marks overlap, entwine, morph and then untangle resulting in a consistently evolving maze.
In Passages Murphy explores the spaces between abstraction and figuration with the element of line traversing the function of representation to a purely abstract visual vocabulary of its own. In this two part exhibition Murphy takes us on a journey in which Drawing is used to process both internal and external change. For Murphy the practice of Drawing has become ritualized and provides a means to navigate the passages of time.
