Keystone Art Space presents Los Angeles based artist Kim Marra’s first solo exhibition with the gallery entitled In My Room.
The paintings featured in this exhibition consider the relationship between manmade objects and their surrounding natural environments, often substituting one for the other. In one instance, using fabric as a stand-in for water; in another, for a rolling hill-side. The work is a meditation on how people interact with the world around us; how we manipulate space for our comforts, abuse our natural resources for personal gain and rely on our houses and communities stability, without necessarily considering how they came to be. Kim considers and deconstructs visual references to places and objects, to then reassemble them and create new dreamlike and surreal environments.
The work featured in “in my room” was created over the last 18 months. It came out of the pandemic but it is in no way a conscious response to the pandemic. This series has elements of cozy welcoming, of deeply personal space that is at the same time, entirely unreal. Kim Marra is a native New Yorker. After graduating from SUNY New Paltz with a BFA in Painting, Kim spent three years living in New York City before permanently relocating to Los Angeles in 2016. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In Southern California, Kim has exhibited with The Torrance Art Museum, The Helms Design Center and SoLA Contemporary. She has been featured in several publications including Shoutout LA and Paint Pulse Magazine. In 2018, Kim began curating and has produced four successful exhibitions around the Los Angeles area.
