Keystone gallery is pleased to present By and By—an exhibition of new work by Joel Zuercher. The work will be on display from July 30th to August 8th 2021 with an opening reception July 31st from 5 to 9 pm. This is Joel’s second solo show at the gallery.
The work in By and By was initiated in March 2020 at the start of a worldwide pandemic. As the world came to a standstill, artist Joel Zuercher entered the studio and began experimenting with found billboards and posters, visual messaging rendered irrelevant in a commotion-less world, as source material for his collages. Joel’s interpretation of the daily uncertainty and confusion of the last eighteen months resulted in larger scale work, rich with bright color; a counterbalance to the retracting and dulling of daily life. These advertisements were torn and cut apart, then recombined to create new narratives mirroring how so many pre-pandemic stories and plans were disrupted and altered. Joel’s visual diary breaks down and reinterprets the chaotic and mundane, the isolation and frustration of the last year and a half. But the work remains hopeful; the medium of collage itself creates new connections, ideas, and possibilities.
